Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the ways in which we live, work, and make decisions—including decisions that affect children, youth, and families. At Child Trends, we are committed to ensuring that AI is used in ways that promote children’s development and well-being. Child Trends has the capability to apply AI methods to all parts of the research pipeline: from data collection to dissemination. Our AI portfolio includes supporting literature searches and systematic reviews, collecting data effectively, analyzing qualitative data and quantitative data, and providing thought leadership about how to minimize AI risk to children.
Our work in AI spans multiple domains of child well-being, including juvenile justice, early care and education, and K-12 education.
From shaping its use to leveraging its power, we examine how AI tools can be responsibly designed, implemented, and evaluated to advance child well-being.

Child Trends in Action: Advancing Education Transformation With AI
Child Trends helps state education agencies, districts, and schools ethically and effectively integrate AI into their efforts to transform K-12 education systems. Through our AI-Class Framework, we help education leaders use AI to improve teaching, learning, and system operations while centering the needs of students, families, educators, and communities. Our support includes technical assistance, applied research, and strategic advising on implementation, policy development, and responsible use of AI.
We have partnered with education agencies across the country to explore how AI can enhance instructional practices—for example, via supporting math learning and strengthening education research. At the same time, we remain focused on minimizing risks. Our AI Risk Framework for Education helps education systems implement AI tools safely and equitably. We also collaborate with major foundations to inform how AI is incorporated into their education funding strategies.
